STAINED GLASS MAPS
I make maps out of stained glass. This is my home style—my big idea. I start with a map and I end up with a window.
The process contains a lot of collaboration. This is my work of art, but not my map. I do have a spiritual map of this area, but the fine details of this one were derived from my client’s experience.
My maps balance ancient techniques with modernist design ideas. They also balance artistic decisions (which are up to me) with the map itself (which is not). The trick is to find the version with the best composition and weight, and then fill it in with the real world, some art, and chunks of my client’s experience.
Each window is centred on its real location. They say You Are Here. By placing these windows, my clients celebrate the stained glass tradition, but also themselves.
